The UK's Brit Awards 2009 have taken place in London's Earls Court, hosted by Kylie Minogue, James Corden, and Matthew Horne. It was certainly a night to remember.

Great Live Music at the Brits

Some spectacular live acts followed, including Coldplay, Take That, Kings of Leon, Girls Aloud, Duffy, Estelle and The Ting Tings in a collaboration, and 2009’s Outstanding Contribution to Music Award winners, Pet Shop Boys.

Michael Jackson's Controversial Performance

The Brit Awards have been entertaining millions for the last three decades. The show has given birth to some memorable events: Jarvis Cocker ruining Michael Jackson’s live performance with a stage invasion at the 1996 Brit Awards, because, said Jarvis Cocker, “Michael Jackson sees himself as some kind of Christ-like figure with the power of healing… I just couldn’t go along with it anymore.”

The performance in question showed Michael Jackson dressed in a white robe, and held in a crucifixion-style position, while children and a rabbi showed a desire to touch him.

Oasis' Liam Gallagher Invited To Fight

And then there was the Brit Awards 2000, where singer Robbie Williams rather stupidly invited Oasis’ Liam Gallagher to a televised fight, ending the tedious request with, “Are you gonna do it, or are you gonna p**sy out, ya f***in’ wimp?”

The Brit Awards - their Place in Music

The Brit Awards, like other typical music awards shows of its kind, does have a place in the world of entertainment. The artists who win awards, and those who are nominated, are quite often deserving of the attention they receive.

A Simple Musical Celebration

Having said that, the whole affair should be taken with a pinch of salt. There will be many much-loved singers, bands, and albums from the year in question that will go unnoticed. But these lesser known musicians will always have their armies of followers, to whom commercial awards shows mean very little. And they’d be right to be so unconcerned by such hollow shenanigans.

Music is a Part of Life

Surely, music is a large, varied part of life, and its place in people’s hearts is unique in the most moving way.

Awards shows like the Brits – although they don’t necessarily speak for the millions, they remain a welcome celebration and discussion of what is popular in the world of music, sparking angry disappointment in some, and approving cheers in others. And that, if not much else, is the point it stands to serve.
