Lady Gaga and Beyonce Lead The Competition Field With Nine Nods Each

The biggest buzz surrounding the nomination announcement was the competition between the three divas of the music biz up for the most awards -Britney Spears, Beyonce, and Lady Gaga.
Three Females Singers Dominate The Competition
Both Beyonce and Lady Gaga were nominated for nine of the "moon men" statues given out by the music channel and comeback kid Spears was nominated seven times for her efforts in the visual music field.
The ladies are going head to head in two categories, Video of the Year and Best Pop Video. In both, Beyonce is nominated for her song "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)", Lady Gaga for "Poker Face" and Spears for "Womanizer". Others are competing in the categories with the women however, with Eminem's "We Made You" and Kayne West's "Love Lockdown" rounding out the nominees for video of the year. And in Best Pop Video, Cobra Starship featuring Leighton Meester: "Good Girls Go Bad" and Wisin y Yandel: "Abusadora" are also nominated.
But the real competition seems to center around who really holds the title of pop-diva dominion over the airwaves and cable channel.
Backgrounds Vary For The Three Divas
Lady Gaga, the relative newcomer, is a 23 year-old Bronx native who released her debut album, The Fame, just last year to mixed critical review. As well known for her weird looks as catchy hooks, Lady Gaga has had two number one hits from the album, the aforementioned "Poker Face" and "Just Dance".
Beyonce, 27, who many have already forgetten started as one of three members of Destiny's Child, has managed to blaze her way into a solo spotlight over the past few years. Her third solo album I Am...Sasha Fierce was released last November and included several hits besides "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)", including "If I Were A Boy" and "Halo".
Britney Spears, 27, perhaps the most famous, or infamous of the trio of singers, released her newest album Circus in December of 2008 after a year of tumultuous tabloid tales and personal problems, including a forced hospitalization and guardianship. Circus is Spears sixth album and has spawned not only the MTV video hit "Womanizer" but also "If U Seek Amy".
Spears' Hard Times May Win Her Advantage
Whether or not Spears, who won Best Female Video, Best Pop Video and the Video of the Year award for "Piece of Me" last year, will again walk away as the comeback kid is up for debate. Many seem to think her climb from institution to world-touring pop star is nothing short of miraculous and that she is deserving on more than one level for her success. Other critics have claimed that Spears may end up in a no-win situation even if she does walk away the victor, due to those that say she will have the sympathy vote.
The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards is scheduled to take place September 13, 2009 in New York City and the Radio City Music Hall.
