With anecdotal lyrics and an acoustic love ballad, Paramore's third album is more than just fun to listen to.
The Twilight phenomenon may have introduced young girls to the band Paramore, whose song Decode plays over the film’s closing credits, but they group’s third album hit stores Sept. 29. Band Matures With Songs on Brand New EyesBrand New Eyes is arguably the most mature album and while it has some of the hard-and-fast pop rock, on songs such as the album’s first single Ignorance, which made 2005’s All We Know is Falling and 2007’s Riot! so thrilling it also features polished acoustic songs and slow ballads, which are among the most introspective. Redheaded lead singer Hayley Williams belts out lyrics with as much gale-force power or more as she’s accustomed to and she puts her stamp on each track, using intonation, linking of words and enunciation in a vastly unique way from others. “Any longer I couldn’t have made it,” she sings on Ignorance, emphasizing longer’s first syllable with a role of the L and a vibrato on the O. On The Only Exception Williams demonstrates her ability to sing a love ballad as expertly as she does her rock songs. She performs it fluidly, endearingly and sincerely, helping to make it one of the disc’s best. Brick by Boring Brick is a fast-paced pop-rock song about the disillusionment surrounding fantasy and reality and it shows Hayley Williams is capable of blending interesting and anecdotal lyrics with enjoyable sounds and rhythm. Williams Shows off Writing Skills With BandmatesWilliams shares a writing credit on all of the album’s 11 songs and co-wrote all but one, All I Wanted, with band guitarist Josh Farro. All I Wanted was a writing collaboration between Williams and guitarist Taylor York, who also co-wrote three other songs with Williams and Farro. As with all things Twilight, the details of the soundtrack to New Moon, which rises in November, are highly publicized. The Washington state band Death Cab for Cutie is taking the mantle of Paramore by doing a song for the film. Williams did write and perform a song on the Jennifer’s Body soundtrack called Teenagers, but it sounds as if the group won’t be writing any more movie songs soon. “We got asked to do Transformers 2 and New Moon, and we don’t want to be the movie band,” Williams said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. The album is justly getting positive reviews in magazines including Entertainment Weekly and People and it’s unlikely to disappoint any listeners who enjoyed either of the previous records and just as likely to bring in new fans.
