If you haven’t heard Sara Bareilles’s “Love Song,” yet, you’ve probably been living under a rock for the past year. The international hit, featured most recently in the 2008 film Made of Honor, opens with a catchy sequence of piano chords, and is the first track on the album "Little Voice." But fans of the song shouldn’t stop listening there.
“Bottle It Up,” the second single off of “Little Voice” has developed a radio presence as well in recent weeks. The track is slower and features less piano than “Love Song” but will have listeners humming along to it just the same.
“Vegas,” which serves as a slower contrast to the preceding track (“Love Song”), is a ballad about someone traveling to new places to find what she’s looking for. “Many the Miles” falls into the same vein as “Vegas” theme-wise, beginning with the line, “There’s too many things I haven’t done yet.” “Morningside” is a bold, wonderfully ear-catching song that begins with low, pounding piano chords and moves into an upbeat chorus. “Between the Lines” is about mistrust in a relationship and is placed well between the faster “Morningside” and “Love on the Rocks.”
Six tracks, “One Sweet Love,” “Come Round Soon,” “Love on the Rocks,” “City,” “Fairytale,” and “Gravity,” appeared on Bareilles’s first studio effort, the 2003 album “Careful Confessions” and are back for round two on 2007’s “Little Voice.”
“One Sweet Love,” the fourth track of the album, is the perfect song to listen to while relaxing on a rainy day. “Come Round Soon” follows and has a similar “chill” feel to it, but with a dash of anger and sarcasm added into the mix of lyrics and piano chords.
“Love on the Rocks” tells the tale of a stormy relationship, and “City” is a beautiful melody about a girl who can sometimes feel lost in the big city. The penultimate track, “Fairytale,” is a girl-power-esque tune just as fun to listen to as “Love Song.” The verses describe the not-so-glamorous, post-happily-ever-after lives of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, and Rapunzel.
The heart wrenching, entrancing “Gravity” is the final track on the album, featuring a slow, sad melody and touching lyrics. After the song is over, listeners will have two realizations: that they’ve just heard a very good album, and that they want to go back to the beginning and listen to fun, upbeat “Love Song” all over again.
